Give it up for Marce the Recycler
As today is Giving Tuesday, our through line centers on the generous act of transferring our time, talent, or treasure to those in need. Let's go!
Meet Sara Samaniego, aka Marce the Recycler. Sara is an influencer who promotes the act of recycling from her hometown of Bogotá, Colombia.
Now, I'm not normally inspired by "influencers," but Sara is an exception.
Here’s a human who gives it up for other humans, specifically those who do our dirty work and do it with pride and purpose.
She uses her alter ego, "Marce the Recycler," to make the act of recycling cool. She has hundreds of thousands of followers on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. Sara's pretty funny, too. (Give her a follow and you might even learn a few words of Spanish along the way.)
But it goes deeper and more human than that. I'm impressed with Sara because she uses her influence specifically to help the city's informal network of 26,000 recyclers — people who earn subsistence wages collecting recyclables. (The City of Bogotá does not collect recyclables.) Sara educates people how to sort and clean their recyclables, which saves valuable time for those who wind up doing the collecting.
Doesn't sound like much, but if you read this New York Times article about Sara, you'll understand what a big benefit this is to the people who do the arduous work of collecting society's throwaways for recycling.
So let's give it up for Sara!
Godspeed, friends.
